A retainer could change the customer's incentives too. If a buyer pays to keep a machining slot available, a late drawing starts costing that buyer money before a single part is cut. The proposed pilots could tell us something useful about keeping customer commitments as well as keeping shops open.

THANK YOU. I went looking and found 18K machine shops - your 17K idle is probably valid. OTOH talking to some they have more work than they can handle. I sense they’re instinctively laying low and they’re probably right. Things have not yet completely changed and certainly not settled.

If the average machine runs about a quarter of the time, would you say quoting is the bottleneck today but machinists become it once a network fills those hours? How many of those 16,876 shops could staff a second shift?

They won’t hire without work.

Fair, the work has to show up before the second shift does. Thanks for the reply.

Anything that can be done to help the American worker and the country please do, I certainly try in my modest way. As the author said what is needed is organization in a word (my word not his) and resources. He is very correct that CMMC and other certifications are holding back thousands of immensely skilled and needed hands.
